When you open a search box, what are you actually looking for? Information that might change your mind—or a better argument for the position you already hold?
That distinction matters. Confirmation bias is the tendency to favour evidence that supports an existing expectation while overlooking, dismissing or failing to look for contradictory evidence. The American Psychological Association describes it in those terms.[1]
A familiar example
Imagine you think a colleague is lazy. You notice every late arrival. But when they stay behind to finish a job, you call it an exception. This is an illustration, not a judgement about any real person: the same behaviour gets weighed differently depending on the story you started with.
Now apply that question to a political argument, a headline or a video you strongly agree with. Did you check the original claim? Did you look for the strongest credible challenge? Or did agreement feel like verification?
Would I accept this evidence if it supported the other side?
Try a fairer check
Write down the claim. Make it specific enough to examine. “Everything is biased” is much harder to test than one named claim about one event.
Decide what could change your mind. Think about this before searching, so you have a standard beyond “I like the conclusion”.
Look for a credible challenge. Start with original research, documents or full statements where possible. A contrary opinion alone does not make a source reliable.
Use the same standard both ways. Ask whether you are excusing weaknesses in evidence you agree with while demanding perfection from evidence you dislike.
These are suggestions for checking your reasoning, not a guarantee of perfect judgement. Sometimes your original view will hold up. Sometimes the evidence will be incomplete. Sometimes you will need to update it.
The useful habit is being willing to find out. You do not have to abandon every belief to examine it honestly.

Imagine these two headlines about the same fictional demonstration:

One puts disruption at the centre. The other puts the demand at the centre. Each could describe part of the same event. Neither headline gives you the whole account.
Look at the frame
In his 1993 paper on framing, communication scholar Robert Entman explains how a message selects aspects of an event and makes them more prominent. Those choices can encourage a particular understanding of the problem, its causes, its moral meaning or its possible solutions.[1]
That does not establish that a specific journalist is dishonest. A short report must make choices about what to include. The useful question is how well those choices represent the evidence and the context.
What am I being invited to notice—and what would I need to know next?
Read past the headline
Use the fictional example to practise four checks:
The words: which terms describe what happened, and which add an evaluation?
The voices: who is quoted? Who is affected but not heard?
The context: what happened before this moment? What is known, disputed or still unverified?
The original material: can you find the full speech, report, footage or data behind the summary?
Comparing coverage can help reveal differences in emphasis. It cannot settle the facts by itself. Two outlets can repeat the same error; a minority account can also be wrong. The quality of the underlying evidence still matters.
Use the same checks on a creator you like—including More Life Studio. Trust should leave room for questions.

History becomes more interesting when we stop treating knowledge as the achievement of one civilisation working alone.
Faith, observation and practical questions
In the medieval Islamic world, astronomy helped answer practical religious questions: when to pray, which direction to face, and how to determine dates and the times for fasting. These needs contributed to improvements in observation, instruments and calendars.[1]
Researchers drew on Greek, Persian and Indian traditions, translating works into Arabic and developing existing ideas. Baghdad was a major centre of study between the eighth and tenth centuries, alongside other centres across the region.[1]
One example is the tenth-century astronomer ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi. His Book of the Images of the Fixed Stars combined inherited astronomical knowledge with new observations made at Isfahan, in present-day Iran.[1]
Knowledge grows when people inherit an idea—and keep asking questions of it.
A richer way to read history
Rather than turning this history into a competition about who deserves all the credit, try following an idea across languages, places and generations.
Who translated it? Who funded the work? Which practical problem motivated it? What did the next scholar correct or add? Those questions give us more to explore than a list of famous names.
It is also worth being precise: astronomy studies celestial objects. Astrology makes claims about their influence on human affairs. They overlapped historically, but that history does not make astrological predictions scientifically reliable today.
For this studio, the interesting thread is the relationship between curiosity and purpose. A question rooted in everyday life can become a reason to observe more carefully, measure more accurately and learn from someone else's work.

You do not need a dramatic announcement every time you decide to change something. Sometimes the most useful beginning is one quiet promise you can actually keep.
This is a personal reflection, rather than a scientific formula. The point is to make the next action clear enough that you can tell whether you did it.
Make the promise specific
“I’ll sort my life out” leaves a lot of room to postpone. “I’ll read two pages after dinner” gives you a place to begin. So does “I’ll prepare tomorrow’s lunch before I sit down” or “I’ll put my phone away for the first ten minutes of the morning”.
Pick an action that fits the life you have today. There is no prize for making your first step so ambitious that you cannot repeat it.
A small promise, kept, is a real action. Start there.
Let it belong to you
Ask yourself what the promise is for. Is it helping you learn, look after yourself, practise your faith or show up better for someone? A clear purpose gives the action meaning beyond looking productive.
You can tell other people if that helps. You can also keep it private while you find your feet. You do not owe anyone a performance of progress.
Leave room to begin again
If you miss it, look at what got in the way. Was the action too large? Was the timing unrealistic? Could you make the next attempt simpler?
There is a difference between taking responsibility and turning one missed day into a verdict on your character. Adjust the promise and give yourself another chance to keep it.
You will still have bigger goals. This is just a way to give one of them a place in an ordinary day.

What do we mean by the Golden Age?
The phrase describes a long period of intellectual and cultural flourishing across the medieval Islamic world. It covers different regions, institutions and generations. Scientific work continued beyond the dates commonly assigned to the “Golden Age”.
Muslim scholars were central to that history. Jewish, Christian and other scholars also worked in its intellectual networks. In Baghdad, translated Greek, Persian and Indian knowledge became material to study, test and develop. The National Library of Medicine documents that collaboration particularly clearly in the history of medicine.[4]
Here are nine areas that show the scale of the contribution. Some achievements were new designs or approaches; others transformed earlier work. Both kinds helped knowledge move forward.
Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi wrote an influential Arabic algebra textbook in ninth-century Baghdad. Its treatment of al-jabr helped give algebra its name and a systematic teaching tradition. Later scholars in the Islamic world developed the subject further.[1]
Earlier Babylonian, Greek and Indian mathematics contained algebraic methods. Al-Khwarizmi’s achievement was a major step in organising and extending a field that grew across many civilisations. Describing that achievement accurately gives us a stronger history than claiming there had never been algebra before him.
02 Algorithms: a name with a history
The word algorithm developed from a Latin form of al-Khwarizmi’s name. His arithmetic work was part of the transmission of calculation methods that later reached European readers.[2]
Today an algorithm is a procedure for carrying out a task. That linguistic connection is remarkable, but it does not mean one scholar invented every step-by-step method or the modern computer.
03 Hindu-Arabic numerals: making calculation travel
The decimal numeral system has Indian origins. Scholars in the Islamic world studied, adapted and transmitted it, helping it reach Europe. In the tenth century, al-Uqlidisi explained methods of calculation with Indian numerals on pen and paper.[2]
This is why “Hindu-Arabic” is a useful name: it acknowledges a shared history. The contribution includes making a powerful method more practical and more widely available.
04 Optics: studying how we see
Ibn al-Haytham, who lived around 965–1040, brought rigorous mathematical and physical investigation to light and vision. His Book of Optics examined rays of light, the eye and reflection. Translations influenced later work in Europe, including that of Kepler and Descartes.[3]
The history of photography rests on centuries of work on light. Ibn al-Haytham belongs in that story as a major contributor to optics; calling him the inventor of the modern camera would skip the later developments that made photography possible.
05 Medicine: observation, teaching and reference books
Al-Razi was noted for his clinical observations and influential medical writings. Ibn Sina, known in Latin as Avicenna, produced the Canon of Medicine, consulted for centuries. Arabic medical works entered European teaching through translations, including those made in medieval Spain.[4]
These scholars helped organise extensive bodies of medical knowledge for study and practice. Their works were historical medical systems, not substitutes for current clinical evidence.
06 Surgery: making techniques and instruments teachable
The Andalusian physician al-Zahrawi produced al-Tasrif, a compendium whose surgical section explained procedures and instruments. Its detailed descriptions and illustrations made practical knowledge available to other practitioners.[5]
His achievement includes developing and documenting surgical practice. Surgery and instruments also had earlier traditions, so the valuable historical question is which designs and techniques he introduced, adapted or described.
07 Astronomy: more careful observation
Astronomers improved observations, star catalogues and mathematical models. Practical questions included prayer times, calendars and the direction of Mecca. Al-Sufi’s work on the fixed stars combined inherited knowledge with new observations.[6]
Instruments such as the astrolabe had earlier origins; scholars and makers in the Islamic world refined and used them extensively. The story is one of sustained measurement as well as ingenious objects.
08 Engineering: clocks and ingenious machines
Al-Jazari described mechanical devices including elaborate water clocks and machines for raising water. Surviving manuscript illustrations show how mechanisms were explained visually. The Metropolitan Museum preserves a design for his elephant-shaped water clock; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, preserves a water-raising design.[7]
These designs bring the period to life: technical knowledge was used to move water, measure time and create astonishing mechanical displays. Their value lies in the mechanisms and documentation we can actually examine.
09 Chemical techniques and maps of the world
In Islamic chemical technology, distillation was important for medicinal and industrial uses, perfumes, rose water and essential oils. Texts and apparatus belong to the development of laboratory practice.[8]
In geography, al-Idrisi completed a major geographical work and world map in 1154 for Roger II’s court in Sicily. The Library of Congress documents this ambitious project and its sectional maps.[9]
The legacy is in the questions people asked—and the work they left for others to build on.
This is a selected introduction, not a complete catalogue of Muslim inventions. A civilisation’s achievements include scholarship, institutions, craft and collaboration, alongside individual discoveries. Learning the names and examining the surviving work lets us appreciate that legacy with confidence.

What makes a pattern worth studying?
The 88/88 pair is worth examining. The Corpus separates malak, angel, from other vocabulary sharing its root, such as kingship and possession. A count of a particular noun is different from a count of every word built from the same root.
The same discipline should apply to every row. Start with the Arabic, specify the forms, list the occurrences and explain any exclusions. Avoid using one rule for one word and another rule for its partner just to reach a match.
A pattern becomes more useful when someone else can check it.
For Muslims, numerical balance can be a subject of wonder and reflection. Whether a particular balance proves divine authorship is a further interpretive argument. Equal counts alone do not establish mathematical impossibility of human composition.

Some of the most widely shared claims about the Quran involve paired words and striking totals. They deserve more than a screenshot: they deserve a counting rule you can inspect.
“Man” and “woman”: a reproducible 24/24
The Quranic Arabic Corpus lists 29 occurrences under the noun rajul and 26 under imra’ah. Five of the first set are grammatical duals; two of the second set are duals. Excluding those duals gives 24 singular occurrences of each.[1][2]
This method includes attached particles and possessive endings. It excludes plural forms and other vocabulary for men and women. The grammatical singular rajulan at 7:155 is included even though the surrounding phrase refers to seventy men. The count is about the Arabic form, not how many people a sentence describes.
That equality is real within this defined scope. It is not the same claim as “every word referring to a man or woman occurs equally often”. Our count explorer lists each occurrence so you can follow the method yourself.
What about “day = 365”?
That familiar claim uses a narrower selection than the complete Corpus entry for yawm, which indexes 405 occurrences across its forms, including plural and dual forms.[3] A wider tally and a restricted tally answer different questions.
Some Muslim scholars have cautioned that popular numerical arguments select forms inconsistently. Islam Question & Answer discusses exclusions such as attached possessives and compound expressions in the 365 claim.[4] We have not independently reproduced a 365-entry list here, so we label it a reported claim rather than a verified site result.
Daylight is a different Arabic word
The Corpus indexes nahār, daylight, 57 times, and layl, night, 84 times; the related laylah forms add another eight occurrences.[5][6] “Day” in an English translation can therefore conceal different Arabic vocabulary.
A meaningful pattern should come with a method—not just a number.
A believer may find a balanced pattern spiritually striking. Whether a count establishes divine authorship is a further argument: equal totals alone do not demonstrate that a human could not compose a text with that pattern. Being precise protects the claim you actually have.

Look up at the night sky and it is difficult not to feel small. For a Muslim reader, the Quran’s language about creation can make that feeling a beginning: a reason to think about the Creator and the world we inhabit.
Many contemporary readers connect the final phrase, wa innā la-mūsiʿūn, with the expansion of the universe. Some translations emphasise expansion; others emphasise making the heavens vast or ample. The Corpus’s parallel translations let you compare those choices.[1]
What modern astronomy establishes
Cosmic expansion is a scientific finding. NASA explains that the expansion of space stretches light travelling through it, producing cosmological redshift. Astronomers study observations of that light to investigate the expanding universe.[2]
That is the scientific account. The next question is interpretive: does the Arabic wording specifically describe ongoing cosmic expansion in the modern technical sense?
Read the tafsir as well as the translation
The abridged English Ibn Kathir commentary available on Quran.com explains the verse in terms of Allah’s strength and making the heaven vast. It does not set out a modern cosmological model.[3]
This matters because a translation carries choices. The verse does not give a measured expansion rate, identify a cosmological equation or spell out the observation behind modern redshift research. Calling it a precise scientific prediction therefore requires a linguistic and historical argument, not simply matching one English word.
Wonder can deepen when we read more carefully.
For believers who see the wording as a sign of revelation, that conviction can sit alongside careful study. Compare translations, examine the Arabic, read earlier commentary and then describe your interpretation honestly.
The verse’s call to consider divine power and the vastness of creation is already substantial. We can reflect on that meaning without pretending every interpretive question has been settled.
A QUESTION FOR THE FORUM
What would establish that a verse describes a particular scientific discovery, rather than being compatible with it?
Modern astronomy, the text and the interpretation are identified separately. This article explores a scientific-miracle argument; it does not present disputed exegesis as a scientific consensus.
A glass of water is so ordinary that we can forget what it means. The Quran invites the reader to look at familiar things again: to see a sign where habit has made us stop noticing.
A striking statement about life
AL-ANBIYA · 21:30 · EXCERPT
وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ
Sahih International renders this phrase: “made from water every living thing”.
The connection between water and life is explicit in the verse. It is also central to contemporary biology: NASA’s astrobiology resources describe water as essential for all life as we know it on Earth, and explain its importance as a solvent for biological processes.[1][2]
For many Muslims, that connection is a powerful invitation to reflect. Something we drink, wash with and see falling from the sky is bound up with the living world around us.
What does a “scientific miracle” claim add?
The verse’s wording and the scientific importance of water can be examined directly. The stronger claim—that this statement could not have been made by a human being at the time—requires additional historical evidence and a clear account of what the wording uniquely predicts.
The relationship between rainfall, vegetation and living creatures is also observable without modern laboratory equipment. Agreement with a scientific finding is therefore not, by itself, a demonstration of inaccessible advance knowledge. A reader can regard the verse as a divine sign while stating that distinction plainly.
And the heavens and earth being parted?
The same verse describes the heavens and earth as joined, then separated. Some modern readings connect this with the Big Bang. Earlier interpretations were not uniform: the Ibn Kathir commentary preserves explanations involving the separation of heaven and earth, and another account involving rain from the heavens and vegetation from the earth.[3]
Those readings help explain why identifying the verse with one specific cosmological model is an interpretation. The verse is not a technical outline of the Big Bang’s sequence, measurements or physical mechanisms.
Reflection does not require us to make the text say more than it says.
The spiritual question remains direct: if water sustains the life we depend on, how should that shape our gratitude and care for the world around us? That is worth taking into an ordinary day.
A QUESTION TO TAKE AWAY
What familiar part of creation have I stopped paying attention to?
“Life as we know it” is the scientific scope. The article does not claim all conceivable life has been observed, or treat a modern cosmological reading as the only historical interpretation.
When a theme returns after a long passage, it can change how we understand the passage in between. The Quran’s coherence is a rich subject for study: the relationships between verses, the movement of a surah and the order of the whole text.
More than a list of separate statements
Raymond Farrin’s research argues that the Quran contains a network of thematic symmetries and coherent designs. His work includes a structural study of Surah al-Baqarah and a book on symmetry and interpretation.[1][2]
One kind of symmetry is called ring composition. Themes unfold and then return in reverse order around a central turn. The following is an illustration of that technique, not a map of a particular Quranic passage:

A structural reading asks whether the proposed boundaries and thematic matches are supported by the text. Readers can disagree about a particular map without denying that coherence is worth investigating.
The “middle community” and 2:143
A frequently discussed observation concerns the phrase ummatan wasaṭan in verse 2:143, translated in terms of a balanced, middle or upright community.[3] In the familiar 286-verse numbering of al-Baqarah, 143 ends the first half.
The arithmetic is exact: 286 ÷ 2 = 143. But an even-length chapter has two central positions, 143 and 144, with the midpoint between them. Saying “143 is the only middle verse” would be less precise than the actual observation.
Structure and the Islamic claim of iʿjāz
The Quran itself states a challenge to produce its equivalent, including at 17:88. Muslims understand its inimitability, iʿjāz, as part of the case for revelation.[4] A literary study and a theological conclusion are related discussions, but they are not identical kinds of demonstration.
Symmetry alone does not establish that human composition is mathematically impossible: a person can deliberately write a symmetrical text. Nor can we give an honest probability for the Quran’s entire arrangement without specifying what counts as a pattern and what alternative compositions are being compared.
Look closely enough to appreciate the design—and clearly enough to describe the argument.
For a believer, the language, coherence and impact of the Quran can be deeply compelling. Studying those features carefully gives that conviction a more substantial conversation than claiming every proposed chart is an uncontested proof.
