DAILY BRIEFING

Reviewed

Source publication dates and reporting periods appear on every report.

Reviewed 2 November 2026. Monday Gaza incident reporting and Sunday Hebron reporting added; useful older humanitarian reports and frontline accounts retained with their original dates. Reuters’ indexed report was accessible, but its full page could not be opened; its provisional figures are attributed to medics. OCHA’s latest listed situation report is titled 29 October and displayed as published 31 October; its data cover earlier periods. Publication dates differ from event periods. No fresh UNICEF, WHO or UNRWA figures are asserted. Figures may be revised; sources are assessed critically, not treated as perfectly unbiased.

Everyday life under growing restrictions

Shatha Yaish, Oren Ziv and Basel Adra report how settlement expansion, military restrictions and displacement have reshaped Palestinian life. Residents describe pressures on work, schooling, family visits and access to land. This reported feature follows changes across several years, rather than counting incidents on a single day.

Covers The preceding four years, particularly developments since 7 October 2023; published 26 October 2026

01

THE GEOGRAPHY

One people. Geographically separated places.

The occupied Palestinian territory comprises the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Gaza is on the Mediterranean coast; the West Bank lies beside Jordan. They are geographically separated, but both form part of the territory discussed in UN reporting on Palestine.

DISPLACEMENT & MEMORY

1948: understanding the Nakba

During the 1948 war surrounding Israel’s creation, about 750,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled from their homes. Palestinians call this mass displacement the Nakba, meaning “catastrophe”. Its consequences continue through the unresolved refugee question and the histories of displaced families.

A SHORT HISTORICAL THREAD

1967 and Oslo: occupation and interim arrangements

Israel occupied Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem in June 1967. On 13 September 1993, Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization signed the Oslo Declaration of Principles, establishing a framework for interim Palestinian self-government. Jerusalem, refugees, settlements and borders were left for permanent-status negotiations.

SECURITY COUNCIL · 23 DECEMBER 2016

What international law says about settlements

UN Security Council Resolution 2334 reaffirmed that Israeli settlements in Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, have no legal validity and violate international law. The resolution demanded an immediate and complete end to settlement activity there.

INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE · 19 JULY 2024

The ICJ’s advisory opinion

The ICJ concluded that Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory was unlawful and must end as rapidly as possible. This was an advisory opinion on international legal obligations. The opinion itself is non-binding; it was not a criminal conviction of an individual.

UNDERSTANDING A DEFINITION

Who does UNRWA count as a Palestine refugee?

UNRWA’s operational definition covers people who normally lived in Palestine between 1 June 1946 and 15 May 1948 and lost both home and livelihood because of the 1948 conflict. Descendants through the male line can also register. This determines eligibility for assistance; it does not describe every displaced Palestinian.

The ICJ’s 19 July 2024 occupation opinion is separate from the South Africa v. Israel genocide proceedings and from the ICC’s criminal cases. Background reviewed 31 October 2026.

CRAFT / MEMORY / STORYTELLING

Culture carried
across generations.

Palestinian embroidery carries skills and traditions between generations. UNESCO added it to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021. Palestinian Hikaye, a storytelling tradition primarily carried by women, joined the list in 2008.

How this page is put together

We centre Palestinian lives and civilian impact. We link the original source, name who is making a claim, and keep news, institutional reporting and historical context distinct. No outlet is free of perspective; a familiar name is not a substitute for evidence.

The daily review checks both Gaza and the West Bank. If reliable new reporting cannot be checked, the previous dated briefing stays visible. We do not advance its review date just because a day has passed.

Deaths, injuries and displacement figures can change or use different definitions. Read the source’s methodology and reporting period. We do not combine incompatible totals or present provisional figures as final.
