Equations with a practical purpose.

Al-Khwarizmi · Algebra

In ninth-century Baghdad, al-Khwarizmi set out systematic ways to solve equations, using words and geometry. The problems connected mathematics to inheritance, trade and land measurement.

He organised and extended earlier mathematical traditions. His book’s title helped give us the word algebra; his name later became the basis of algorithm.
